Energy efficient products you may consider

Advances in the area of power management have led to the increase in the number of energy efficient products around us yet many have not taken time to understand that they can indeed crash their energy bills overnight or in reality in a matter of days or weeks.

Unless most (if not all) of your electrical and/or electronic appliances are new chances are that you are surrounded by appliances that open their mouths wide to consume a lot of electricity anytime they are working.

When a lot of people around my house started asking me why my bills are almost always under N450.00 a month (in fact the last was N304.50 whereas the highest in the past 10 months was less than N800.00) I told them that I have opted to use energy efficient products even if that meant complete replacements for some of the items.

Another major benefit for choosing energy efficient products is that in an inverter backup scenario a total investment of less than N200,000.00 can provide up to 24hrs backup for a typical home in Lagos state. Don't worry if you are not convinced, I will show you how this is possible in a moment.

Now, let us list what a typical home would have - TV, radio set, 2 fans, fridge/freezer, 8 bulbs, pressing iron, A/C.

One thing you must remember what talking backup is that you must understand the difference between appliances you must run and appliances you may like to run, in other words choosing the most important appliances to run makes the most sense.

So, from our list above this typical home would do well if they remove things like fridge/freezer, pressing iron and A/C.

Don't worry if you believe the fridge/freezer is a must in your home, we shall take care of that later, just read on.

Now, we are left with 8 bulbs, 2 fans, TV set, radio set and of course points for charging phones. A small inverter (2kva or 2.5kva) and a battery bank of about 9600VA can effortlessly provide you with over 24hrs of backup when regular utility fails.

We know that food stuffs and drinks (whether water or soft or even beer) need to be cold or even chilled and we can't leave them out of the equation.

This is where energy efficient products come in.

I went to an electronics shops to window shop before deciding on what to get and I saw a small freezer but the power rating was 160W. I told the shop owner that I wanted a freezer of similar size but with a power rating less than 100W, he told he doubted if freezers with such low power ratings exist. Meanwhile I continued my search and in no time I saw one with just 70W, yes 70 watts. The shop owner was pleasantly surprised and I proceeded to show him appliances that were energy efficient even in his own shop.

So, with a freezer that takes just 70W you may not even need to hook it up to your backup system as a good freezer could preserve the contents inside for up to 2 days. Even if you wanted to add it, it won't be a problem but in this case it is not necessary.

Items you may consider replacing in your home or office

1. TV - 100W as against the typical 160W and above (beware of plasma as some take 380W and above, well if you have more to buy one then paying for the energy won't be a problem anyway)
2. Computer monitor (flat screen) - 36W as against about 250W for the regular CRT type
3. Electric bulbs (energy saving type) - 10W or 15W as against the regular 60W or 100W
4. Freezer - 70W as against a typical range of 160W - 1000W ( I have seen a small freezer take up to 1000W while conducting an energy efficiency program for a client)
5. Electric fans - 50W as against the typical 100W and above

Apart from looking at this from a backup point of view changing these appliances will immediately crash your regular utility bills from PHCN.

Depending on your own peculiar situation you can save up to 70% of the money you currently spend every month on energy bills.

A good backup may see you reduce your fuel/diesel consumption from N360,000.00 in 2 years (for the small Tiger generator 950VA and for just 8 hrs a day) to less than N200,000.00 in 2 years (or about N300,000.00 in 4 years if you are getting deep cycle batteries for your battery bank).

Energy efficiency program will lead to reduced cost of energy, conserving energy will save money for you and of course you can use that money to buy more beer to drink or dvds to watch.
